Student Exchange Programme ...

This Franco Irish exchange programme has been organised for the past 33 years by the Secondary Teachers based in Ireland and in Brittany. This year the organisation celebrates its 34th birthday.

Irish students taking part in the exchange programme will travel to and from France in groups. While in France, the Irish students will be under the personal supervision of experienced leaders and of the French organisers.

Irish students will depart for France on June 10th, and return on July 1st. Their French exchange partners return with them on that date and will return to France on July the 22nd.

Transition Year Students: may go during the school year if they wish. Information can be found on the transition student page. Please ask for special information sheet for transition years.

On arrival in France they will be met by the French family (their exchange partners family) with whom they will be staying. It is through living with this family and sharing the experiences of everyday French life that the Irish student gains valuable insights into the social habits and culture of France. This will enable him/her to improve his/her ability to think in, understand and speak the language. When abroad the participant is treated as a member of the exchange partner's family and is expected to join fully in all family activities.

Likewise while the exchange partner is in Ireland he/she must be made feel at home and involved in normal family activities. Over the past 33 years it has been arranged that Irish students could, if they wish attend school for a few days at the beginning of the stay. This has proven to be very successful and we hope to repeat this in 2012.

While the Irish Students may, if they wish, be given the opportunity of getting together once or twice during their stay, students are advised to refrain from making unnecessary contact with the other Irish Students while on exchange. Should any student have any problem, whatsoever, they will be able to contact the leaders and\or organisers in charge. All students will be given full instructions on who to make contact in advance of departure. Students will be placed in a family where his/her age, interests, hobbies and personality are fairly similar to those of his/her exchange partner.

Details of exchange partners will be sent to each student in advance so as to give them time to write and to get to know each other before the exchange begins. The cost €890 is all in. It covers the organisation, the trip to France, coach transfers in France and the travel and expenses of the leaders etc. Completed applications forms with two recent size passport photographs should be posted directly to the following address, of which can be found on the
Contact Details Page.

Forms are to be filled in by parents or guardians, in black biro. A booking deposit of €300 is to accompany your application form. Cheques can also be made out to Mr Joseph O'Neill. Unsigned forms and those not accompanied by a photo and deposit will not be accepted. As the size of each group is limited late applications cannot be guaranteed a place. It is now possible to get an individual student passport, so we ask each applicant to get one.

Students who intend to work outside their own family or who will be absent from the family while their exchange partner is in Ireland are not accepted. It is absolutely unacceptable for any other French student to be in a family for any period while the exchange student is there. Students and families who may have problems with dates can be accommodated if they contact us and discuss same.

To be an exchange student requires some understanding - he/she must realise that he/she will have to live with his/her partner for 6 weeks. In France, he/she should avoid making unnecessary contact with their friends or group members. He/she should make an effort to adapt to the French way of life and speak French on all occasions - what is important is the willingness to get involved rather than the level of French itself.

Students who do not have an obvious desire of their own to go on exchange should not be encourage to take part.

If any student or parent would like to have more information or clarify any point, we would be delighted to oblige. The address to write to is:
